Histon and Impington are unique in terms of their primary education provision in that there are two schools on two sites with two head teachers. There’s the infants school in New School Lane and the junior school just off the Green. County Councillor David Jenkins paid a visit last Thursday afternoon.
The junior school is led by head teacher Lesley Birch and is rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.
It’s not a pretty school. There are no fine old buildings and nothing ultra-modern. It’s more the best that the 1960s could provide. However there is just about enough space and there is generous space for games with a fine sports field out back. And inside there’s a bustle and an enthusiasm from both staff and children which is infectious.
Cllr Jenkins said: ‘Histon Junior School is fairly typical. It’s just a little bit short of space and it’s probably short of funds but it provides excellent education for the children of the villages. We can be proud of it.’
