On his first anniversary as leader, Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg set out plans to put Britain on a ‘Green Road out of the Recession’, creating jobs and leaving a legacy that will save energy, put money back into people’s pockets and fight climate change. The plans will cost £12.5bn, which would be paid for by scrapping the proposed VAT cut. People desperate for financial and legal advice are less important than party political one-upmanship. This seems to be the only conclusion possible from the rejection, by the Conservatives in charge of the County Council, of a plan to grant £100,000 immediately, and more next year, to advice agencies such as the Citizens’ Advice Bureau. Another week, another by-election and another Lib Dem gain from the Conservatives. Just right for Christmas! This by-election, for the Cambridgeshire County Council division of Hardwick, came about as a result of the disqualification of the sitting Tory councillor. Local campaigner and activist Fiona Whelan had been preparing to fight the seat next year but got an early chance to show what she could do. She took it and delivered. Well done Fiona. At the recent by-election for the Teversham seat on South Cambs District Council Lib Dem Frances Amrani won the seat in a 3 cornered fight. The seat had previously been held by the Tories but this time Frances easily took first place with a 5% point margin. Read the rest of this entry.

I’m staying in Bandung, Indonesia which is perhaps this country’s equivalent of Cambridge in that it’s home to ITB, the Bandung Institute of Technology, which has a world-side reputation. Premier Foods is a major employer in Histon, probably the largest, and is a significant contributor to the local economy through employment and the spending of its employees at local businesses. It operates many of the businesses started up by Chivers in the middle of the 19th century and although most of the raw materials are now imported the products that go out today are little different to those which were shipped then. Lib Dems at Cambridgeshire County Council voted against the Council’s Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy at the October 2008 council meeting. They did so on the grounds that it is insufficiently ambitious and does not address the carbon reduction targets recently reaffirmed by the government and agreed with the European Union.
